Tales from a Work at Home Grandma

By Judith-Work At Home Grandma
“Work from Home!” they said.
And, yes, I really wanted to be able to do that,  but I didn't believe it!

You see, my father died when I was just 8 years old. And, I was left to grow up with an abusive

stepfather. You learn many things quickly, including how to take care of yourself. By the time I
was 9, I was making money babysitting, cleaning houses, doing ironing, yardwork and errands. By
the time I was 14, I was lying about my age and working in shops and stores parttime. At 16, I
was a lifeguard at Huntington Beach in California. I lied about my age and in those days they
never checked! I passed the tests and worked 2 summers.

I thought I had 2 choices, get really good grades and go to college or join the military and see the
world. My grades earned me a free ride at U.C.L.A. And I took it. But then, like many others, I
met the man who was my perfect mate, married and 2 years later had a son. I was bored and
begging for adult conversation as a stayathome mom.

I started a personal shopper business and sold my “book” a few years later to pay the mortgage. I
sold Tupperware, Princess House Crystal, Christmas Around the World and Avon. But in the old
days there was no internet and if you moved to far away, you lost it all. And then I found that I
had a knack for dealing cards, so we moved to Las Vegas. I was very successful in the 21 years I
worked in the casinos.
But, the stress is horrible. I became a widow when I was just 38. My mom became my best friend and I cared for her until she passed. I started selling Avon again for lots of reasons, new friends, something to do, extra money ( I have
grandchildren to spoil!)

And now, it is truly my time. I followed my son and his family across country when they asked. My son and daughter in law said “Follow your dream mom. It's your
turn.” And, so now, I am a work at home business owner with a team of over 100 partner reps. I am learning, teaching, mentoring, stretching myself beyond the boundaries I set so long ago. Follow me as I tell you about my challenges and triumphs. Share my successes and my failures.
Perhaps it will help you follow your dreams, too.
